Project #1, Students in Typography 1, create a uncial alphabet and an illuminated letter to illustrate either a song or poem. They digitize the letters and use the computer to design a layout on a 22x30 inch canvas, the final layout is transferred to a piece of 22x30 inch paper and completed by hand using pens and markers.

Project #2, Students in Typography 1, examine 10 serif typefaces, choose one typeface and alter 6 uppercase and 6 lowercase letters from that typeface to make their own. Next they take 3 letters and design within a 4x6 inch rectangle a lettermark. Their lettermark design is transferred to a linoleum block, carved and printed onto paper.
Project #3, Students in Typography 1, Students layout the Declaration of Independence, on a 24x36 inch digital canvas, paying close attention to layout/design, hierarchy, typeface selection, kerning, letter-spacing and typographic color.
